ETEST®

Manual Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing for veterinary laboratories
  • Complete range of tests
  • Cost Effective

Antimicrobial resistance testing reagent

Veterinary diagnostic laboratories are constantly required to perform Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing with animal samples. ETEST® is the ideal manual method for routine AST operations.

It consists of a predefined gradient of antibiotic concentrations placed on a plastic strip, which are used to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of antibiotics. The well-established ETEST® method demonstrates high performance in AST, as it provides a level of precision that automated methods cannot reach.

For veterinary laboratories, determining quantitative MIC data is essential both to ensure animal health and to avoid any risk of zoonis, extremely dangerous to men.

BIOTOOLS™

bioTools™ along with a range of ETEST® accessories are designed to simplify the handling of ETEST®. bioTools is a family of instruments made up of the Retro C80™, Simplex C76™, and Nema C88™ that are easy to use, reducing operator fatigue, saving time and improving the quality of results. These tools simplify reading by standardizing inocululation and application of strips in optimal patterns on media plates.

Simplex C76™ Automates the placement of 1 to 6 different ETEST® strips to simplify the setup of MIC panels.  Application of up to 6 strips for large agar plates or up to 2 strips on small plates takes <12 seconds. (ref. 559802)
Retro C80™ A rota-plater that simplifies and standardizes the inoculation of small and large agar plates making ETEST® easier to read when compared to manual streaking. (ref. 559803)
Nema C88™ A vacuum pen that simplifies the application of ETEST® strips. The applicator is held like a pen and the evacuation hole covered with the finger tip to create suction.  The suction cup is placed on the strip to lift it up and then positioned onto the agar surface. The strip is released by removing the finger tip from the evacuation hole. (ref. 559804)

ETEST® Accessories

Every Detail Counts

ETEST® Measuring Sticks – 5 per package (bioMérieux ref. 559904)

Used with foam packaging to conveniently determine the number of strips remaining. Scaled in 10 strips increments up to 100 strips maximum.

ETEST® Clamps – 5 per package (bioMérieux ref. 559809)

Used with foam packaging to seal opened foil pouches. Creates a proper seal, and when used with desiccant, ensures humidity does not damage strips.

Mini Storage Box with Desiccant (bioMérieux ref. 559900)

The Mini Storage Box includes two desiccant capsules and extended stability studies have validated its effectiveness in preserving ETEST® shelf-life of up to 2 foam packages. Other non-airtight boxes may be suboptimal and cannot guarantee the stability and shelf-life of the strips.

Midi Storage Box with Desiccant (bioMérieux ref. 559901)

The Midi Storage Box includes six desiccant capsules and extended stability studies have validated its effectiveness in preserving ETEST®shelf-life of up to 6 foam packages. Other non-airtight boxes may be suboptimal and cannot guarantee the stability and shelf-life of the strips.

Maxi Storage Box with Desiccant (bioMérieux ref. 559902)

The Maxi Storage Box includes twelve desiccant capsules and extended stability studies have validated its effectiveness in preserving ETEST® shelf-life of up to 12 foam packages. Other non-airtight boxes may be suboptimal and cannot guarantee the stability and shelf-life of the strips.

Storage Container (bioMérieux ref. 501603)

The Storage Container can hold one foam package and it includes one desiccant capsule. Extended stability studies prove its effectiveness in preserving ETEST® shelf-life. Unused strips have the same expiry date as the original packaging when properly kept in the Storage Container.

Applicator Tray (bioMérieux ref. 559909)

The applicator tray makes it easy to set up ETEST® panels containing multiple antimicrobials per plate. Simple place the antimicrobial strips of choice into the wells as shown below, and use a manual applicator device such as the Mini Grip-It to place the strips on to agar plates.

Mini Grip-It (bioMérieux ref. 411200)

The Mini Grip-It is a device that makes it easier to grab, hold, and move small and light objects from one place to another. The suction cup picks up hard to handle items such as ETEST® strips, antibiotic disks, and glass/plastic cover slips. The whole apparatus can be autoclaved.

Desiccant Capsules - 8 per package (bioMérieux ref. 559709)

ETEST® is susceptible to moisture and open strips must be stored with active desiccant. When using alternative storage units, it is mandatory to ensure that desiccant capsules are used with an air-tight container.  As desiccant absorbs moisture it will change color from yellow/orange to white. Capsules are reactivated by heating for 2 hours at 70°C or until the orange color is restored. a)   Activedesiccant b)    Inactive desiccant (reactivate or replace)
This unique ETEST® gradient strip is designed for phenotypic detection of Enterobacteriaceae possessing MBLs(metallo ß-lactamase), including strains with the recently discovered NDM-1 resistance gene. This type of bacterium is resistant to nearly all ß-lactam antibiotics, and they are not inhibited by clinically available ß-lactamase inhibitors. The MBL MP/MPI strip is specifically designed to detect these problematic resistance phenotypes by measuring the inhibitory concentration (IC) ratio of meropenem to meropenem + EDTA to detect MBLs. The IC values serve to measure a ratio (MP/MPI), and cannot be used to determine MIC values for MP. ETEST® MBL MP/MPI is a double-sided strip consisting of Meropenem (MP) on one side and Meropenem plus EDTA (MPI) on the other: . MP concentration: 0.125 –8 μg/ml . MPI concentration: 0.032 –2 μg/ml plus constant level of EDTA

Easy-to-read results

The presence of MBL is indicated by a reduction of MP IC by ≥3 doubling dilutions in the presence of EDTA (i.e. IC ratio of MP/MPI of ≥8), the appearance of phantom zones, or deformation of ellipses (see fig 1).  The table below provides examples of proper ETEST MBL MP/MPI interpretation. Figure 1: The image above shows an isolate with a MPI IC of 0.032 and an MP IC of ≥8, therefore the MP/MPI ratio is >250 indicating an MBL positive strain.
